E-commerce margin: profit margin definition, gross vs net margin, formulas, markup vs margin, contribution per order, Shopify and key profitability points.

The margin (profit margin) measures the share of revenue that remains after deducting costs. In e-commerce, we mainly distinguish between gross margin (after product cost), contribution margin (per order, after variable costs), and net margin (after all expenses). It is a central indicator for pricing, promotions, ad budget, and comparison with CAC.

Summary

Definition: margin, profit margin and types

In e-commerce, margin most often refers to a profitability rate expressed as a percentage of turnover (revenue), sometimes an amount in euros depending on the context. Always specify whether you are talking about gross, net, or contribution margin.

Common formulas.

In practice, several elements are worth keeping in mind. Gross margin % here refers to = (Revenue − COGS) ÷ Revenue × 100, where COGS = cost of goods sold. The amount Revenue − COGS is the gross profit. Net margin % here refers to = Net Income ÷ Revenue × 100 (after marketing, salaries, Shopify fees, taxes, etc.). Contribution margin here refers to (per order) = Selling Price − COGS − variable costs (attributed ads, customer shipping, shipping packaging, payment commissions depending on the model).

Unit example: product sold for €45 excl. VAT, COGS €14 → gross profit €31 → gross margin 68.9% (31 ÷ 45).

Useful distinctions.

Several distinction help to avoid confusion. You must distinguish Margin vs markup : margin is calculated on the selling price; markup on the cost. Same product: 50% margin ≠ 50% markup (100% markup = 50% margin). You must distinguish Gross margin vs net margin : gross ignores ads and fixed costs; net reflects real profitability. You must distinguish Margin vs AOV : AOV is a cart amount; margin is a ratio or a profitable contribution. You must distinguish Margin vs GMV : GMV measures sold volume, not profitability. You must distinguish Margin % vs margin in € : in French, "marge" can mean both; align this internally.

Why margin matters in e-commerce

An increasing turnover does not guarantee a profitable shop. Many merchants optimize traffic or the conversion rate without tracking the actual margin after promos, returns, and logistics costs.

In practice, several elements deserve to be kept in mind. Pricing here means setting prices compatible with COGS and brand positioning. Promotions here means a -30% discount compresses the margin; simulate before launching (promo code). Ads budget here means the contribution margin caps the sustainable CAC and ROAS. Free shipping here means the absorbed shipping costs eat up the margin if poorly designed (free shipping). Product mix here means identifying high-margin SKUs vs loss leaders. Scale here means growing with an insufficient margin multiplies losses. LTV here means comparing the cumulative customer margin to the CAC (net LTV).

The gross margin varies greatly depending on the sector (fashion, beauty, food, retail). Above all, compare your own evolution over time and against your peers, rather than a universal average.

Calculation, markup vs margin

Markup vs margin (common trap)

Product: cost €20, selling price €50.

In practice, several elements are worth keeping in mind. Margin here refers to = (50 − 20) ÷ 50 = 60%. Markup here refers to = (50 − 20) ÷ 20 = 150%.

A supplier who announces a "150% margin" is often talking about markup, not commercial margin. Verify the definition before setting your prices.

Contribution margin per order

SME Workflow .

The process can be presented simply. The journey continues with Calculate unit gross margin per SKU (price − COGS). The journey continues with Subtract variable costs: advertising per sale, delivery costs, shipping packaging, payment commission. The journey continues with Compare to CAC for the first order; to email cost for repeat purchases.

Variables that squeeze margin: returns, refunds, overstock, cumulative discounts, COGS inflation, free shipping not offset by AOV.

Measure margin on Shopify

Shopify calculates the product margin if you fill in the cost per item on each variant.

In practice, several elements deserve to be retained. Profit margin report refers here to margin by product, collection, period (Shopify Help Center). Analytics refers here to net sales, returns; cross-reference with entered costs. CSV Export refers here to sales + COGS for margin by channel or campaign. Apps refers here to BeProfit, TrueProfit, Triple Whale (margin after advertising and shipping). Accounting refers here to Pennylane, QuickBooks for net margin and complete P&L.

Native limits: Shopify does not automatically deduct all Meta advertising or salaries. The Shopify gross margin ≠ accounting net margin. Complete this with a spreadsheet or an e-commerce P&L app.

key points .

The process can be presented simply. The journey continues with Update the COGS with each supplier change. The journey continues with Documenting a unique definition (product packaging in COGS or not). The journey continues with Tracking gross margin and contribution per order before scaling ads. The journey continues with Reviewing quarterly: promotions, product mix, and logistics costs change quickly.

Best practices and common mistakes

  • Calculate margin per SKU before any ad scaling.

  • Simulate promotions: margin post-discount vs expected additional volume.

  • Think in contribution margin, not just catalog gross margin.

  • Optimize the mix: feature high-margin products (cross-sell, upsell).

  • Review pricing if COGS or inbound freight increase (dynamic pricing with caution).

  • Integrate returns into net revenue and real margin.

  • Align teams: marketing, ops, and finance share the same definitions.

Classic errors:

  • Confusing margin and markup in supplier negotiations.

  • Confusing gross margin and net margin in ad budget decisions.

  • Scaling revenue on a low-margin best-seller without knowing it.

  • Forgetting shipping costs in the contribution margin (free shipping).

  • Failing to enter product costs in Shopify (skewed reports).

  • Aiming for a higher AOV through discounts that destroy margin.

In brief

In practice, several elements are worth keeping in mind. Margin here refers to = share of revenue remaining after costs; often expressed in %. Key types: gross (after COGS), contribution (per order), net (full P&L). Margin ≠ markup here refers to different calculation bases. It drives pricing, promotions, ads, free shipping, and scale. Shopify: cost per item + Profit margin report; supplement for ads and net. Details on gross profit and COGS: gross profit sheet.

FAQ

Gross Margin and Gross Profit: what is the difference?

Gross profit is an amount in currency (Revenue − COGS). Gross margin is the corresponding percentage (gross profit ÷ revenue). See the gross profit sheet for COGS details.

What margin should you aim for in e-commerce?

It depends on the sector, the model (DTC private label vs. resale), and your cost structure. The essential point: the contribution margin per order must cover the CAC and leave a positive contribution before fixed costs. Compare your progress over time rather than looking for a universal figure.

Margin and markup: how to convert?

If markup = (price − cost) ÷ cost, then margin = markup ÷ (1 + markup). Example: 100% markup → 50% margin. Always clarify the term used with your suppliers.

Does Shopify display net margin?

Shopify primarily displays the product / gross margin if the cost per item is entered. For net margin (after ads, salaries, taxes), supplement this with your accounting or a dedicated P&L app.
