What is eco-participation? E-commerce definition
June 4, 2026
The eco-participation fee (eco-participation fee, éco-contribution) is an amount added to the sale price of certain products to finance the collection and recycling of their end-of-life waste. In France, e-commerce merchants selling electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE), furniture, textiles, or toys must pass on and display this contribution visibly on the product page, at checkout, and on the invoice.
Summary
Definition of eco-participation
The eco-participation is part of the principle of extended producer responsibility (EPR): the one who places a product on the market finances its end-of-life channel (collection, sorting, recycling).
In e-commerce practice:
The merchant applies a unit amount set by a scale (approved eco-organization); The customer pays this amount in addition to the product price (or with explicit mention if included); The merchant remits the collected amounts to the eco-organization (ecosystem, Ecologic, Refashion, Éco-mobilier…).
Common EPR channels in online stores:
WEEE (WEEE): electronics, household appliances, cables, lamps, batteries; EPR: household packaging (distinct obligations, repair bonuses depending on products); Textiles, furniture, toys, tires: specific scales for each channel.
Useful distinctions should be read as practical guidelines to understand the topic well.
Eco-participation vs tax: it is not a public tax; the funds go to eco-organizations, not to the Treasury; WEEE eco-contribution vs VAT: VAT is a consumption tax; eco-participation finances recycling (distinct tax regime); Eco-participation vs discount: the discount reduces the price; the eco-participation is a mandatory regulated amount; Visible display vs opaque all-inclusive price: the law requires clear information on the amount, not just a global price without detail; Placer on the market: manufacturer, importer or distant seller introducing the product to France; each has EPR obligations according to their role.
Why eco-participation matters in e-commerce
For a French merchant or one selling to France, the eco-participation is not optional on the products concerned.
Legal compliance: Environmental Code, AGEC law; possible controls and sanctions; Customer transparency: the consumer understands the real cost and the environmental gesture (B2C); Trust: legal mention on the product sheet reassures about the seriousness of the shop; Invoicing: amount to be included on quotes, orders, and invoices (order); Accounting: tracking of amounts collected and transferred to the eco-organization; Price comparison sites: displayed price consistent with obligations (avoiding gaps vs marketplaces).
Omitting the eco-participation on an electronics store exposes you to customer complaints, rejection from comparison sites, and regulatory risks. Scales change every year: stay up to date through your eco-organization (ecosystem, scales).
Display and management of scales
Display rule (WEEE, France): the amount must be visible and identical up to the final customer, in addition to the unit price on the label, product sheet, and invoice; in distance selling, by any appropriate method (text under the price, cart line, checkout summary).
Standard wording on a product sheet:
Price: u20ac29.90 + WEEE eco-contribution: u20ac0.15
Or: including WEEE eco-contribution: u20ac0.15 (explicit amount).
The fee schedule depends on the product category (weight, type of equipment, sector). Indicative examples for household WEEE (order of magnitude, ecosystem / Ecologic public schedules):
Small accessory (cable, USB drive): cents; Computer peripheral (mouse, keyboard): a few cents to tens of cents; Large household appliances or screens: higher amounts (several euros).
Always consult the current rate schedule for your exact SKU.
Use case: French Shopify store selling Bluetooth speakers (WEEE). For each model, the merchant identifies the ecosystem schedule category and enters u20ac0.42 eco-participation per unit. On the product sheet: "u20ac79.00 + eco-participation: u20ac0.42". In the cart and checkout, a separate line. On the PDF invoice: "including WEEE eco-participation u20ac0.42 excl. tax" per line. Every quarter, declaration and payment to ecosystem with sales receipts.
Eco-participation management on Shopify
Shopify does not natively calculate the French eco-participation. The merchant must manage it manually or via an extension.
Product metafields: "eco_part_deee" field displayed in the theme (Liquid); Line item properties or draft custom: less suitable at scale; Third-party apps: EPR / eco-contribution solutions (depending on the sector and country); Fee product: some merchants create a "fee product" (not recommended, complicates customer service); Shopify Markets: different rules depending on the country; France requires visible display; Invoices: accounting apps (Sellsy, Pennylane, French invoicing) or order export with an eco-participation column.
Shopify France merchant checklist (EPR products):
The process is understood as follows: Register the company with the sector's eco-organization; Map each SKU to a tariff category; Display the amount on the PDP, cart, and checkout; Carry over to the invoice and archive declarations; Update amounts during annual tariff revisions; Verify the T&Cs and legal notices (SIRET, contact).
Cross-border sellers: if you ship products subject to EPR from abroad to French customers, verify your status as a producer placing goods on the market in France.
Points of vigilance to be aware of
To keep this topic useful for the store, it must above all be linked to a concrete objective: better informing the customer, making operations more reliable, or improving conversion. Consult your eco-organization's official price list every year Display the amount clearly, not just in a generic footer Harmonize your website, marketplace, and invoices Train customer service: explain what the eco-contribution is if the customer asks Maintain accounting traceability of collection vs. payout Distinguish between sectors: WEEE ≠ furniture ≠ textile
The main points to watch out for concern data consistency, readability for the buyer, and the team's ability to maintain the system over time. Forgetting the display on the product sheet (mandatory) Including the amount in the price without explicitly mentioning it Applying an incorrect flat-rate amount for all products Failing to register with the eco-organization thinking the Chinese supplier handles everything Confusing the eco-contribution with VAT on the invoice Ignoring price list updates (January or sector-specific dates) Selling in France from Shopify without adapting the theme to the French market
In summary
In summary, eco-participation = regulated amount to finance recycling (EPR) Mandatory in France across many categories (WEEE, furniture, textiles…) Visible display in addition to the price: product page, checkout, invoice Scales set by eco-organization; varying amounts depending on product category Shopify: metafields, theme, apps; no native FR management.

FAQ
Is the eco-participation a tax?
No. It is a contribution collected to finance recycling through an approved eco-organization. It is not a tax paid to the State, unlike VAT.
Do I need to display the eco-participation on a Shopify store?
Yes, if you sell products in France subject to an EPR scheme (e.g. WEEE): the amount must be visible on the product page and during the buying journey, in accordance with the Environmental Code.
How do I find the amount for my product?
Identify the product's category in the scale of your eco-organization (ecosystem for WEEE, Refashion for textiles, etc.). Each type of equipment has a published unit amount.
Does the eco-participation apply to B2B sales?
EPR schemes also apply to professional sales depending on the products, sometimes with separate "pro" scales. Verify the scheme and your status (producer, distributor, importer).
