A Shopify collection (collection) is a product grouping page on a Shopify store: "New Arrivals", "Sale", "Men" or "Best Sellers". It is used for merchandising, navigation, and SEO (URL /collections/handle). Distinct from the entire product catalog, a collection highlights a subset based on manual or automatic rules.
Summary
Simple definition: Shopify collection
On Shopify, a collection groups multiple products together on a single page displaying the title, image, price, and a link to each product detail page. Two native types exist:
Manual collection: you add or remove products one by one.; Automated collection (smart collection): products are included based on conditions (tag, type, price, stock, title).
Each collection has:
Title and description (editorial content + SEO).; Handle: URL segment (e.g., /collections/summer-2026).; Cover image (optional, for menus and home page).
Product sorting: manual, best-sellers, price, etc.; Visibility: published on the Online Store or a specific channel.
Useful distinctions:
Collection vs. category page: in common practice, the Shopify collection plays the role of the e-commerce category.; Collection vs. product tag: the tag organizes in the back-office; the collection generates a navigable page.
Collection vs. navigation menu: the menu links to collections; they are not the same entity.; Merchandising collection ("Sales") vs. structural collection ("Dresses"): same mechanism, different intent.
The value of a Shopify collection for an online store
Collections structure the purchasing journey between the home page and the product page.
Navigation: header, footer, and home point towards collections; Merchandising: highlighting new arrivals, margin, stock to clear; SEO: indexable pages targeting "collection + brand" queries (e-commerce SEO).
Campaigns: landing ads to /collections/sale (associated promo code); Automation: "In Stock" or "Price < €50" collection without manual maintenance; Cross-sell: "Complete your look" via thematic collections.
A confusing structure (too many empty collections, duplicates "Hommes" / "Men") harms UX and dilutes SEO. It is better to have a few clear collections rather than dozens of virtually identical pages.

Manual for strict editorial selections (lookbook, collaboration). Automated for sales, new arrivals, stock or price filters that change often.
Can a product be in multiple collections?
Yes. It is even common (e.g., "Dresses" + "New Arrivals" + "Linen"). Just avoid unnecessary duplicates that create pages that are too similar.
Collection and Shopify menu: same thing?
No. The collection is the product page. The menu (Navigation) is a link to this page (or to an external URL). You create the collection, then you add it to the menu.
How to optimize a collection for SEO?
Clear H1 title, unique 150-300 word description, readable handle, meta title/description, internal links from blog and home, breadcrumbs if the theme allows it.
