What is a pre-order? E-commerce definition

A pre-order allows a customer to purchase or reserve a product before its actual availability. It is used to launch a new product, finance production, test demand, or sell a temporarily out-of-stock item with an announced delivery date. In e-commerce, it can be very effective, provided that delivery times, cancellation conditions, and the time of payment are clearly communicated.

Why pre-ordering can be useful for an online store

Pre-ordering helps measure demand before producing or restocking. For a young brand, it can limit the risk of dead stock. For an established brand, it allows organizing a launch, creating anticipation, and securing sales before the physical arrival of the stock.

It can also improve cash flow if payment is collected at the time of the order. However, this approach must be handled with caution: the longer the delay, the higher the customer expectations and the risk of refund requests increase.

No. Out of stock means a normally available product is temporarily depleted. A pre-order is planned: the product is not yet deliverable at the date of purchase (launch, production in progress).

Should payment be captured immediately?

Generally yes on Shopify (capture at order). Some merchants use a deposit or delayed manual capture via app or PSP settings, especially if the production risk is high.

How to manage a cart with in-stock and pre-order products?
