What is the delivery time? E-commerce definition

E-commerce delivery time: definition of transit and preparation time, business days, differences with estimated express date on Shopify, and tips.

The delivery time (delivery time, transit time) is the duration announced or observed between the order (or shipment) and the receipt of the package by the customer. It is most often expressed in working days or as a range ("2 to 4 days"). In e-commerce, it combines the merchant's preparation time and the carrier transit, and influences conversion, choice of shipping method, and post-purchase satisfaction.

Summary

Definition: delay, transit, preparation

Delivery time measures a duration, not a precise date. In practice, it is broken down into two blocks:

Handling time (handling time, lead time): time to process the order, pick, pack, and hand the package over to the carrier. Transit time (shipping time, carrier transit): transport time to the customer's address.

Common formula displayed to the customer:

Total time ≈ preparation + transit (in business or calendar days depending on the label)

Frequent labels on a shop:

"Delivery within 3 to 5 working days" (Mon-Fri, excluding holidays). "Dispatched within 24 hours, received within 48 hours" (express). "Delivery 7-10 days" (international or made-to-order).

Useful distinctions:

Delivery time vs estimated delivery date: delivery time = duration; estimated date = calendar (e.g., June 8-10). Delivery time vs shipping time: shipping = departure from warehouse; delivery = receipt at the customer's address (plus transit). Working days vs calendar days: working days often exclude weekends; calendar days count every day.

Standard delivery vs express: different delivery times and rates. Advertised delivery time vs actual delivery time: marketing promise vs measured performance (logistics KPI).

Why delivery time matters in e-commerce

Delivery time is a major purchasing criterion, just like price or shipping costs.

Conversion: a delivery time that is too long or unclear causes cart abandonment. Carrier choice: the customer pays more to reduce the delivery time (standard vs. express). Competition: implicit comparison with Amazon and marketplaces.

Trust: realistic delivery time met = positive reviews; unkept promise = complaints. Customer Service: clear delivery times limit "it's taking too long" tickets (customer support). Seasonality: Christmas, sales, launches: adjust the displayed delivery times.

In the European Union, without an agreed date, the maximum legal delivery time for distance selling is in principle 30 days (check applicable texts and your T&Cs). Announcing a shorter delivery time creates a more demanding customer expectation: stick to it or communicate proactively in the event of a delay.

Types of lead times and customer display

Standard delivery times by service (indicative, depending on carrier and zone):

National Standard: 2 to 5 business days (Colissimo, Mondial Relay home delivery). Express: 24 to 48 hours (Chronopost, DHL Express). Relay point: often +0 to 1 day vs. home delivery.

International EU: 3 to 10 business days. Outside EU: 7 to 21 days (plus customs). Made-to-order / pre-order: explicit extended delivery time (weeks).

Where to communicate the delivery time:

Shipping page (global policy). Product page (slow or custom products). Checkout: by shipping option.

Confirmation email (reminder of delivery time + tracking link).

Use case: French tech accessories Shopify store. Policy: fulfillment 1 business day (order before 2 p.m.), Colissimo home delivery 2-3 business days mainland, Mondial Relay 2-4 days. Product page display: "Ships within 1 business day · Delivery within 3-5 business days in France". Checkout: "Standard €4.90 (3-5 business days)" vs "Express €12.90 (1-2 business days)" option. DOM-TOM customer: dedicated shipping profile "7-12 business days". Custom engraved product: metafield "Additional time +3 days". The displayed delivery times feed the calculation of the estimated delivery date at checkout via an app.

Delivery time on Shopify

Shopify manages delivery times via shipping profiles and the rates associated with each zone (Shopify Help Center).

Shipping profiles: group products by logic (standard, fragile, large volume). Zones: France, EU, international with distinct rates and labels. Flat rates: name them with the delivery time ("Colissimo 3-5 days").

Calculated carrier rates: delivery time sometimes estimated by the carrier API. Local pickup: in-store pickup time (click and collect). EDD Apps: convert delivery time into a date at checkout.

Recommended configuration:

1. Measure average actual preparation + transit time over 30 orders. 2. Round up to the higher range (safety margin). 3. Align checkout labels, Delivery page, and FAQ.

4. Exclude weekends if you advertise "business days". 5. Adjust profiles during peak periods (Black Friday) or if 3PL changes SLA.

Case of dropshipping: the delivery time includes the upstream supplier; display a conservative range or by shipping region. Case of free shipping: the delivery time remains a lever (free but standard 5 days vs paid express 2 days).

Points of vigilance to be aware of

Be explicit: business or calendar days, always specified. Cut-off time: "order before 2:00 PM to ship today". Differentiate zones: mainland, Corsica, DOM-TOM, international. Measure the actual time: order date → confirmed delivery date (carrier).

Communicate delays: proactive email if the deadline is exceeded. Standard vs. express: visible difference in shipping times at checkout. Tracking: as soon as shipped (package tracking).

Points to watch out for:

Displaying "24-48 h" with manual shipping within 72 h. Mixing business and calendar days without stating it. Same delivery time for all countries (unrealistic).

Forgetting local public holidays during the holiday season. Promising express shipping without a suitable carrier contract. Not updating delivery times for out-of-stock or pre-order products.

The key takeaways

Delivery time = preparation time + transit to the customer. Distinct from the estimated date (calendar) and shipping time alone. Key stakes: conversion, carrier choice, trust, after-sales service, compliance.

Shopify: shipping profiles, zones, rate labels, EDD apps. Realistic ranges, specified business days, measurement, and communication.

FAQ

Delivery time vs. estimated date: what is the difference?

The delivery time is a duration (e.g., 3-5 business days). The estimated date projects this duration onto the calendar (e.g., delivery between June 12 and 14) based on the order date.

Business days or calendar days: which to choose?

French B2C carriers often use business days (Mon-Fri). Be sure to specify this in your labels. Express "24h" shipping sometimes counts in hours or calendar days depending on the service: check the carrier's terms.

How to configure delivery times on Shopify?

Via Settings > Shipping and delivery: create zones, named rates with the delivery time in the label, and complete with a Delivery page and an EDD app if you need dates at checkout.

Does the displayed delivery time commit the merchant?

If it is communicated before purchase and appears in the T&Cs or confirmation, it can engage your commercial liability. It is better to provide a realistic range and communicate in case of delay.
