What is a marketplace commission? Definition
June 4, 2026
The marketplace commission (marketplace fee, referral fee) is the remuneration charged by a marketplace (Amazon, Etsy, eBay, Cdiscount marketplace, etc.) on each sale made on its platform. It is generally calculated as a percentage of the selling price, sometimes accompanied by fixed fees or a seller subscription. For the merchant, this is a direct cost that reduces the margin and must be integrated into pricing and the choice of sales channels.
Marketplace commission is often accepted as a cost of access to traffic. However, it must be calculated with precision, because a few commission percentage points can turn a profitable sale into a low-margin operation.
Summary
Marketplace commission definition
On a marketplace, the seller does not just pay to "be listed": the platform takes a cut of each successful transaction in exchange for traffic, buyer trust, secure payment, and sometimes logistics.
Common components:
To fully understand this concept, we notably find Sales Commission (referral fee): % on the product price (excl. or incl. taxes depending on the platform), Closing fee: fixed amount per item (certain Amazon categories), Seller subscription: monthly flat fee (Amazon Pro, Etsy Plus), Logistics fees: FBA, marketplace fulfillment (distinct from pure commission), and On-site advertising: Sponsored Products (ads cost in addition to the commission).
Useful distinctions:
To fully understand this concept, we notably find Marketplace commission vs payment fees: the commission pays the platform; Stripe/Shopify Payments charges for card processing (often in addition to DTC), Marketplace commission vs marketplace: the marketplace is the channel; the commission is the unit cost per sale, Commission vs affiliate commission: the affiliate is paid by the merchant; the marketplace takes its cut first, and Commission vs gross profit margin: integrate commission + COGS + shipping for the true profit per channel.
Why marketplace commissions weigh on profitability
Selling on a marketplace can generate volume, but the commission eats away at profitability if it is not modeled.
For an online store, we notably find Net margin: same turnover, lower profit than the own store, Pricing: marketplace price often aligned or higher than the site to compensate, Channel choice: compare implicit CAC (commission) vs DTC ads, Product mix: low commission categories vs penalized categories, Cash flow: seller disbursement delays (Amazon bi-weekly, etc.) and Brand strategy: marketplace for acquisition, site for loyalty (recurring customers).
A high commission can still be acceptable if the volume and visibility compensate for the organic acquisition cost on your site. The reverse is also true: a low commission but few sales is of no use.
How to analyze commissions by sales channels
Orders of magnitude (variable depending on category, country, date; check official grids):
Concretely, we notably find Amazon: referral fee often around 8 to 15% depending on category + optional FBA fees, Etsy: transaction commission + listing and payment fees, eBay: final value fee depending on category + insertion options, and French Marketplaces (Fnac, Cdiscount): specific seller grids.
Use case: accessory at €29, COGS €8, seller shipping €3. On Shopify DTC: payment ~2%, gross margin ~€16 before ads. On Amazon at the same price: referral 15% (~€4.35) + FBA €3.50 → margin before ads ~€9. Decision: Amazon for volume and discovery; push packaging insert toward the site for -10% for repeat business without commission. Calculation redone every quarter because grids evolve.
Do not confuse the displayed commission with the total marketplace cost (internal ads, returns, long-term storage).
Marketplace commission tracking with Shopify
Shopify does not apply the Amazon/Etsy marketplace commission: it is the third-party platforms that charge their fees. Shopify bills the store subscription and the marketplace integration apps.
Common integrations:
In Shopify, we notably find Amazon, eBay, catalog and order sync apps, orders imported into the Shopify Admin for unified customer service, stock: bidirectional sync to avoid overselling and reports: compare Online Store revenue vs marketplace in analytics.
Standard workflow: marketplace listing price = f(cost + commission + shipping + target margin). Spreadsheet tool or ERP by SKU and by channel. Shopify remains the product source of truth for many multichannel merchants.
Documentation: seller fee schedules on Amazon Seller Central, Etsy Sellers, eBay Seller fees sites (consult the official up-to-date pages).

FAQ
Marketplace commission and Shopify fees: do they stack?
On a pure Amazon sale, you pay Amazon fees, not Shopify (except sync app). On a Shopify DTC sale, you pay subscription + payment, not marketplace commission.
How to calculate the margin after commission?
Selling price − COGS − shipping − marketplace commission − payment fees − allocated ads = estimated net margin. Do the math per channel.
Can you negotiate the commission?
Generally no for small sellers; public rate cards apply. Some premium or high-volume programs negotiate specific conditions.
Is it better to avoid marketplaces?
Not systematically. Many brands use marketplaces for volume and brand awareness, and their own site for margin and customer data. It all depends on your business model.
