What is a digital product? E-commerce definition

June 4, 2026

A digital product is an intangible good sold online: ebook, template, preset, video training, audio file, software, license, or downloadable document. Unlike a physical product, it requires no shipping package or carrier. After payment, the customer receives a download link, access to a platform, or an activation key. For an e-commerce store, this format allows selling expertise, content, or a tool with greatly reduced logistics.

Summary

Digital Product Definition

The digital product corresponds to a file or an access right delivered electronically. It can be a PDF, a ZIP file, a Notion template, a training course, music, a plugin, or a pack of creative resources. The customer buys online and receives the content without waiting for a physical shipment.

The distinction from a service is important. Personalized coaching, a design mission, or a technical intervention fall under services. A digital product, on the other hand, is generally standardized: the same file or the same access can be sold to multiple customers.

Concept

Role

Physical product

Shipped object with stock, packaging, and delivery.

Digital product

File or access delivered automatically online.

Service

Service provided for a specific client or project.

Some products are hybrid. A brand can sell a paper book with a bonus PDF, a vinyl accompanied by an MP3 download, or digital training associated with a physical kit.

Why digital products are useful in e-commerce

Digital products attract creators, trainers, DTC brands, and publishers because they greatly limit logistical constraints. Once the content is created, it can be sold multiple times without needing physical reproduction for every order. This does not mean it is free to produce, but its cost structure is different.

This format also makes it possible to expand a store's offering. A photo equipment brand can sell presets, a sports store can offer a training program, and an expert can market templates or practical guides. Digital then becomes an entry-level product, a complement, or a loyalty lever.

However, sensitive issues must be anticipated: file protection, expired links, unauthorized sharing, VAT on digital products, customer support, and the clarity of refund conditions.

Digital delivery and customer experience

The success of a digital product relies heavily on its delivery. The customer expects to receive their file or access quickly after payment. A missing email, an expired link, or a file that is too large can turn a simple sale into a support request.

The product page must therefore be very explicit. It must specify the file format, its size, the necessary software, the language, the terms of use, and what is included. The more the customer understands what they are buying, the less frustration there is after downloading.

  • Link sent automatically after payment.

  • Access from a customer account or a library.

  • Download limit or link expiration if necessary.

Sell a digital product on Shopify

On Shopify, a digital product must be configured as non-physical to avoid unnecessary shipping charges. The merchant can then use a dedicated app, such as Digital Downloads or a more advanced solution, to attach the file to the order and automatically send the link to the customer.

The setup must be tested before going live. It is necessary to verify that the payment triggers the sending, that the email arrives correctly, that the link works on mobile, and that the file can be downloaded without difficulty. Mixed products, combining a physical item and a digital file, require special attention at checkout.

Depending on the market, the taxation of digital products may differ from that of physical products. B2C sales in the European Union, for example, may involve specific digital VAT rules.

Points of vigilance to be aware of

The digital product does not eliminate customer support. On the contrary, questions about access, compatibility, downloading, or using the file are frequent. A clear FAQ, a well-written delivery email, and an explicit file name prevent a large portion of inquiry requests.

Perfect protection against sharing does not exist. Expiring links, download limits, watermarks, and terms of use reduce risks, but do not eliminate them. The strategy must therefore combine reasonable protection, adapted pricing, and a strong perceived quality.

Generally no: disable inventory tracking (unlimited stock). Exception: limited seats (live webinar, nominative license).
