What is a digital wallet? E-commerce definition

June 4, 2026

A digital wallet (digital wallet, electronic wallet) is an application or service that securely stores a user's payment methods (cards, bank accounts, balances) to pay online or in stores without re-entering details for every purchase. In e-commerce, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Shop Pay, and PayPal are the most visible examples at checkout.

Summary

Simple definition: digital wallet

The digital wallet acts as a trusted intermediary between the customer, their bank, and the merchant. The user registers their cards or accounts once; during payment, the wallet transmits a secured token (token) rather than the card number in plain text.

Typical functions:

Card storage: Registered Visa, Mastercard.; Express payment: One-click or biometrics (Face ID, fingerprint).; Saved addresses: Pre-filled delivery (Shop Pay, PayPal).

Mobile payment: NFC at the point of sale (Apple Pay, Google Pay).; History: Searchable transactions in the wallet app.

Useful distinctions:

Digital wallet vs manual card entry: The wallet avoids typing 16 digits for each order.; Digital wallet vs payment gateway: The gateway connects the store to the PSP; the wallet is client-side (or an express layer like Shop Pay).; Digital wallet vs BNPL: BNPL finances the purchase in multiple installments; the wallet may contain a card used to pay, not a credit in its own right.

Digital wallet payment vs gift card: The gift card is a prepaid store balance; the wallet stores generic payment methods.; E-commerce wallet vs crypto wallet: This glossary focuses on traditional card and account payments, not Bitcoin wallets.; Digital wallet vs payment methods: Wallets are a category among the payment methods accepted in stores.

The benefits of a digital wallet for an online store

On mobile, manual card entry remains a major source of abandonment. Wallets reduce this friction.

Checkout conversion: payment in 1 to 2 clicks (conversion).; Mobile-first: biometrics are faster than a keyboard on a small screen.; Perceived trust: reassuring Apple, Google, and PayPal brands.; Security: tokenization, no PAN storage on the merchant side.

Pre-filled data: email, address, fewer checkout steps.; International: popular wallets vary by country (cross-border).; Loyalty: Shop Pay remembers the buyer for subsequent visits.

Offering at least one well-known wallet to your audience (Apple Pay on iOS, Google Pay on Android) complements the classic bank card. Ignoring wallets especially penalizes mobile traffic and impulse purchases (click to buy).

Using with Shopify

Shopify enables wallets via Shopify Payments and accelerated checkout buttons (Shopify Help Center, Accelerated checkouts).

Shop Pay: activated with Shopify Payments; buttons on product page, cart, and checkout; Apple Pay: Safari and Apple devices; merchant certificate to be configured; Google Pay: Chrome and Android depending on the country.

PayPal: separate gateway or PayPal express checkout; Dynamic checkout buttons: display of available wallets on the PDP; Shop Pay Installments: integrated BNPL (distinct from the pure wallet, but same Shop ecosystem).

Merchant checklist:

Enable Shopify Payments in target countries; Check Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay in Settings > Payments; Verify button display on real mobile devices (OS 2.0 theme).

Test a complete flow: authorization, 3DS, email confirmation; Compare checkout conversion rates with and without wallets (Analytics).

Wallets do not replace manually entered cards: some customers prefer to pay without creating a wallet profile. Offer both options side-by-side.

In brief

Digital wallet = digital wallet storing payment methods for quick purchases.; Examples: Apple Pay, Google Pay, Shop Pay, PayPal.; Challenges: mobile conversion, tokenized security, express checkout.

Distinct from gateway, BNPL, gift card and crypto wallet.; Shopify: accelerated checkouts via Shopify Payments + PayPal.

FAQ

Are digital wallet and "portefeuille numérique" the same thing?

Yes. Digital wallet, portefeuille numérique, and portefeuille digital refer to the same concept in e-commerce: a service that stores your payment methods to pay faster.

Is Shop Pay a digital wallet?

Yes. Shop Pay remembers emails, addresses, and cards for an express checkout on compatible Shopify stores. It is the proprietary wallet of the Shopify ecosystem.

Should I offer Apple Pay and Google Pay?

Recommended if you sell on mobile in eligible countries. Apple Pay primarily covers the iOS audience; Google Pay covers Android and Chrome. Both complement traditional card entry.

Does the merchant see the customer's card number?

Generally no: the wallet transmits a secure token. The merchant receives a payment authorization without storing the full PAN, which limits PCI risks.
