E-commerce
August 19, 2026
The "Perplexity Buy with Pro · AI shopping agent" card describes an in-chat purchase, a one-click agent checkout funnel, for Pro subscribers. Interface: integrated into the model. Autonomy: automatic purchase. Payment: delegated token. Capabilities: product search, price comparison, automated payment, review summarization, multiple merchants. Merchants: all retailers. Regions: United States. How it works: ask a product question, review the cards (features, pros and cons, retailer availability), click Buy with Pro, the agent places the order with saved address and payment details, confirmation and tracking inside Perplexity, free shipping for Pro members. No Gross Merchandise Volume (GMV). No 3-D Secure rate. No audited list of retailers. This article has none either. Automatic purchase here means: after the click, you do not go back to the retailer's website. It is not Operator (card typed by hand). It is not Comet (browser plus side panel). Sticking Buy with Pro into a "shopping channel" indicator means budgeting a card vault at Perplexity, or a PayPal checkout of another 2025 product, not a Shopify Agentic button.
TechCrunch covered the launch of Pro shopping in the US on November 18, 2024: recommendations in results, ordering without visiting the retailer's site, visual cards (price, seller, pros and cons), address and card stored with Perplexity, taxes calculated, one-click, free shipping on this payment, merchant program, integrations including Shopify. Perplexity said at the time it does not take an affiliate commission, and separates this purchase from its advertising product. A year later, a second free product, on the PayPal side, changes who is the merchant of record for the transaction. Two dates. One logo in the directory. Not a Magento. Not a Chromium.
If the concept of a software buyer is new: what agentic commerce is. The 2026 calendar: what has been delivered. The other cards: AI shopping agents. The official totals remain human shopping journeys: 2026 e-commerce statistics.
Summary
A Pro button pasted into an agent directory
Buy with Pro is a payment within the Perplexity response. The directory lists it alongside Gemini. It is not the same contract.
Layer | What the dated texts describe | What the directory does with it |
|---|---|---|
Buy with Pro (Nov. 2024) | Pro US, cards, address and card vault, one click, free shipping, one-click payment partners | Automatic purchase, delegated token, end-to-end agent, all merchants |
Free Purchase + PayPal (Nov. 2025) | Distinct product, purchase from response, PayPal merchants acting as merchant of record, 5,000 brands "eventually" | Missing from the listing title. The user guide remains Pro and Perplexity vault |
Comet | Other listing: browser, side panel, human review at payment | Another Perplexity logo. Not this button |
The directory is right about Pro, US, one-click, confirmation in Perplexity, free shipping. It is wrong if we interpret automatic purchase like Gemini via UCP or like ChatGPT via ACP. A feed submitted for ACP candidacy does not enable Buy with Pro. Neither does Google Wallet. The directory is wrong if "all merchants" means "any Magento product page processes payments here". TechCrunch distinguishes the index (integrations, including Shopify in the US) and one-click payment (merchant program partners).
Delegated token: directory badge. In 2024, it is a card and address saved with Perplexity, then one click. It is not an ACP Shared Payment Token, nor an AP2 mandate. Vocabulary: agentic commerce glossary. Platform framework: what platforms need to change.
The price, deals, search, and checkout tunnel filters are not four Buy with Pro SKUs: task-based buying agents. A merchant who "chooses Perplexity" like a payment provider has only read the title. Ask for: 2024 merchant program, 2025 PayPal payment, theme for Comet, or directory listing. Four deliverables for a single word.

Empowering 200+ e-commerce merchants
November 2024: cards, chest, Shopify, merchant program
On November 18, 2024, TechCrunch described an e-commerce entry point for paying customers in the US. Recommendations in the results. Ability to place an order without visiting the merchant's website. Stated ambition: to take a share of shopping search from Google and Amazon. That is a pitch. It is not Gross Merchandise Value (GMV).
On a shopping query, cards are displayed showing: product, price, seller, short description, pros and cons. A click opens reviews and specifications. This looks like the standard instructions (synthesis, comparison, review synthesis). It is not proof that your SKU is in the card. It is an interface. Product search, if a card quotes you: product search. Comparison, if the fields exist: price comparison. Without an identifier, a machine that "compares" invents the matching: what a machine needs to compare.
Vault: address and card stored with Perplexity. Taxes calculated for the address, the company says. One-click purchase. Free shipping for Pro users on this one-click system. This fits step 5 of the sheet. It is not Honey. Honey injects a code into the buyer's browser. Here, the buyer does not get as far as your promo field, if the one-click payment holds up.
"Unbiased", no sponsored slots, says Perplexity via TechCrunch, "for now". Publisher claim, dated November 2024. The same article says shopping is separate from the ad product launched the previous week. We are not recycling "unbiased" as a 2026 audit. A Google Direct Offer is not this text. Hunting for bargains in the directory is not a coupon: hunting for bargains.
Index: integrations with merchant sites, including Shopify. The phrasing, somewhat sidelined: this "unlocks" information on all Shopify merchants shipping to the US. Read this as an index claim, not as "all Shopify stores have Buy with Pro". Shop is the Shopify consumer app. It is not this index. A readable storefront remains useful if a card links back to you: a Shopify storefront readable by an LLM.
Search by photo plus text, compared to Google. Useful for a buyer. Useless as a payment provider specification document.
Merchant program, launched at the same time. Signing up: more information in the index, therefore a better chance of being recommended, Perplexity says. One-click checkout with partners. Free API to power search on the merchant's site (Perplexity wanting a share of search, says TechCrunch). No affiliate commission "for now". Three sales pitches. Not a ranking service commitment. Not a contract we have read. If a seller promises you will "be in all Pro cards", ask for the program, not the badge for all merchants.
TechCrunch also cites other AI shopping searches (Daydream, Deft, Remark) and Rufus / Google's Shopping tab. We are not deciding on a ranking. Daydream has its profile. The journalist reminds us of the trade-off: trusting a short, restricted list, and the bias. That is the correct merchant reflex. A pros and cons card is not your product sheet.
November 2025: a free PayPal product, another seller in the promotion
On November 19, 2025, CNBC covered the announcement of a free agentic purchase feature for users in the United States, starting the following week, ahead of the holidays. Partner: PayPal. Direct purchase, "eventually," at more than 5,000 merchants. Buy with Pro is named as the paid offering from the previous year. The new product, called Perplexity, better detects purchase intent and personalizes via the memory of past searches. Dmitry Shevelenko (chief business officer): the agentic part is the seamless purchase directly from the answer. Most people still want to do their research, just simpler. So: human search, payment from the chat. This is not a CUA clicking your theme.
The merchant point that the directory does not write down. On this 2025 product, Perplexity says that PayPal merchants remain the sellers of the transaction: purchases, customer service, returns. On Buy with Pro, CNBC writes that Perplexity had served as an intermediary that finalized purchases. Two regimes. A card title. If you are budgeting "Perplexity automatic purchase", ask which one: Pro 2024 vault (Perplexity intermediary) or PayPal 2025 payment (you remain the merchant). The reason codes and customer service do not land in the same place. Failures: where agentic commerce still breaks.
Perplexity declined to tell CNBC if it makes money on transactions for the new product. CNBC compares it to Instant Checkout on the ChatGPT side, where OpenAI said it takes a commission. We do not make this an ACP specification. Rails: how protocols differ. MCP is not a collection rail: MCP and API for e-commerce.
Michelle Gill (PayPal agentic strategy): PayPal buyer protections apply to transactions on Perplexity, and keeping buyers and merchants connected to PayPal on new surfaces. Partner claim. This is not your dispute rate. This is not Buy with Pro 2024.
The directory, in August 2026, still documents Buy with Pro, automatic purchase, delegated token, vault, Pro only. This is a card delay, or a choice to only index the Pro button. Check which badge (Buy with Pro, Instant Buy, or PayPal) actually appears in the chat, rather than copying the five-step user manual like a single contract.
Payment funnel, grid side: agents for the payment funnel. Buy with Pro is there in the automatic purchase bucket, along with Gemini and Amazon Buy for Me. Three mechanisms for a single word.
At home: the index, one-click payment, the intermediary
At your place, three artifacts. The directory shows only one button.
The index: being on a card (price, pros and cons, seller) via a crawler, a Shopify integration, or program data. You are not collecting payment yet. An incorrect JSON-LD lands you on a restricted list. A CSS badge does not.
The partner one-click checkout: TechCrunch reserves this for merchant partners. Address and card already stored with Perplexity. Free shipping with Pro. The human clicks on Buy with Pro. Then Perplexity finalizes, says the user guide. A 2024 intermediary, says CNBC.
The PayPal 2025 checkout: you are the merchant of record, customer service and returns are handled by you, PayPal buyer protection depending on the partner. This is not the Pro vault. This is not Comet.
Web Application Firewall: for Buy with Pro, the buyer often does not render your product page. The retrieval, if one exists, is an indexing crawler, not a client Chrome. Robots policy for the index, not a sidebar User-Agent. Logs: what needs to be logged. Operator clicks your theme. Here, often, no.
3-D Secure: absent from both URLs. Do not assume that a Pro click replays a merchant challenge. Do not assume the opposite. Ask your acquirer and Perplexity or PayPal, depending on the product. We are not inventing the flow.
Amazon Buy for Me is another automatic directory purchase: Amazon agent on a non-Amazon site, Amazon checkout tunnel. Buy with Pro processes payment in the Perplexity chat. Two possible merchants of record. One single word: automatic purchase.
After the order, if Perplexity was the intermediary, the buyer might still write to you anyway. If PayPal leaves you as the merchant of record, the dispute is already yours. The directory hasn't settled it. The two articles have.
Not Comet, not the ACP, not the UCP
Do not merge the Perplexity logos, nor the 2026 tracks.
Surface | Contract | At your home |
|---|---|---|
Buy with Pro | Pro Chat USA, vault, one-click, intermediary that finalizes (2024) | One-click payment program and partners, index. No UCP waiting list |
PayPal Purchase 2025 | Free USA, purchase from answer, PayPal merchant as seller of record | After-sales service and returns. Buyer protection according to PayPal |
Comet | Browser, side panel, human click at checkout | Product page, session firewall, merchant 3-D Secure |
ChatGPT via ACP and Gemini via UCP | Named specifications, integrations elsewhere | Application, feed, token. Not the Pro button |
A pitch of "we will put you in Perplexity" can sell the 2024 program, a PayPal merchant account, a more readable theme for Comet, or a directory listing. Four deliverables for a single word. The Comet sheet has already stated: three Perplexity products. This one documents the button in the chat, including the 2025 shift that the directory did not rename.
"Agent completes checkout" in the sheet, versus "most people want to still do their own research" (Shevelenko, 2025): keep the search in the chat, and the click. Autonomy is not a CUA. Nor is it a record against Daydream.
What this sheet does not measure
This sheet does not measure anything that counts for a sale.
Volume: no gross merchandise volume (GMV). Perplexity has not told CNBC whether it makes a profit on the 2025 product. "No affiliate commission at the moment" dates from November 2024.
Coverage: all merchants is a badge. Shopify in the US in the index is not a universal one-click payment. 5,000 merchants: PayPal and Perplexity horizon, not your long tail.
Bias: "Unbiased" and separation from advertisements: 2024 claims. Not a 2026 ranking audit.
Europe: both texts are in the US. US badge. We are not inventing a rollout in the EEA.
Do not budget Buy with Pro as a channel with a known cost per acquisition. We do not publish one. A Verified listing does not buy a place in the cards, nor an Instant Buy slot, nor Pro free shipping.
"Taking on Google and Amazon", "seamless": pitch. We only recycle what the two URLs date. A generated pro and con is not a review accuracy rate. Review synthesis is a label.
Automatic purchase on the card is not a click-free completed order rate. The instructions say: click Buy with Pro. Keep the click. Throw away the fantasy of an agent paying while you sleep.
Three gestures, not a Perplexity channel
This week, by mechanism, not by logo.
If a Perplexity card already cites you: check price, stock, seller, pros and cons compared to your feed. Five SKUs. A discrepancy is your customer service, not the directory's.
Merchant of record: write on a slide: Buy with Pro 2024 = Perplexity intermediary finalizing; PayPal 2025 product = you are the merchant of record. Ban "automatic Perplexity purchase" without this combination.
Governance: separate Comet (theme, session) and the button in the chat (index, vault, or PayPal). Separate ACP and UCP. Do not sign a single "Perplexity connector".
The ultimate test: would this work still be useful if Perplexity closed the Pro vault and kept only PayPal, or vice versa? A real feed and a merchant funnel, yes. An exclusive Buy with Pro connector, no.
Name the owners: merchandising or feed for the cards, payments or legal for the merchant of record, security only if you are still mixing up Comet. A single owner mixes up a side panel and an affiliate commission "for now".
If you only have one hour: read the sheet (Pro, click, vault, free delivery). Read the two dates (November 18, 2024, November 19, 2025). Do not follow all merchants like a payment service provider specification sheet.
You don’t just turn on Buy with Pro like a channel
You don't turn Buy with Pro on like a channel. Pro users (and then, in 2025, free users on another button) type a query, or not. They see a card, or not. They click Buy with Pro, or Instant Buy, or "Visit website". You maintain a catalog. The badges are not buttons.
If a seller promises to place you "in Perplexity", ask: merchant program, PayPal, Comet theme, or directory listing. Four deliverables for a single word.
UCP and ACP are chosen elsewhere. For Buy with Pro, if there is a purchase, the 2024 protocol is not a public specification in our two URLs: it's a vault plus a click plus an intermediary. Postponing the ACP rail is not postponing Q&A, nor a Shopify index, nor a PayPal account.
After the click, it is your after-sales service or that of the intermediary. The directory did not collect the payment. Do not attribute a size return to it. Do not attribute 5,000 merchants to it.
An index of two payments, not a prize list
Buy with Prime is fragmenting: Prime launch in the US November 2024 (cards, vault, program, Shopify index claim), automatic directory purchase hook, and PayPal free product November 2025 (merchant of record, buyer protection, search history). One-click payment has not "proven" your channel. A preset for all merchants has not "replaced" Phia. This sheet is a starting point: in chat and intermediary first, Comet browser elsewhere, not a rail of the UCP.
Treat it as an index: which button (Prime or PayPal), who is the merchant of record, which fields are missing in the card, which user surface (chat, not Chromium). Four questions. Not a ranking of autonomous agents.
You can ignore Perplexity and keep Merchant Center. You can opt out of the program and remain indexed by a robot, or not. The directory does not decide. Your feed and your merchant of record, however, do decide.
Then open Comet (the other product) and ChatGPT (the business of the ACP). State the contract, not the delegated token badge.
The flow and the seller of the transaction first
The owner is not "Perplexity growth". It is merchandising plus payments plus, if Comet is on the same slide, security. A single owner mixes a generated pros and cons list and a User-Agent.
Users, if any, come via a purchase query in an answer engine, not via the directory. You do not turn on five capabilities. You hold a catalog that a card can cite, and a checkout system that you have named.
If the committee wants a number: there is none here for purchasing. Free delivery is not Gross Merchandise Volume (GMV). 5,000 merchants is not your market. A channel is budgeted on attributed orders, not on an automatic purchase slogan.
The test of the following week: a card, a price, a button (Pro or PayPal), a human who clicks or leaves for "Visit website". If you do not have that, you do not have a channel. You have a listing, and two dates in the press.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Buy with Pro an AI buying agent?
In the directory, it is classified as such, automatic purchase. In TechCrunch 2024, it is a purchase within the Pro chat in the US plus a click. In CNBC 2025, the agentic nature of the next product is the purchase from the answer, while people are still doing their search. Not a browser.
Does it check out on its own?
After a Buy with Pro click, the directory says the agent finalizes with the vault. It is not buying while you sleep. It is not Operator. It is not the UCP. Delegated token is a grid label, not the ACP.
Is Buy with Pro Comet?
No. Comet is a Chromium plus a sidebar. Buy with Pro is a button in the chat. One Perplexity logo, two (then three) products.
Is Buy with Pro ChatGPT Instant Checkout?
CNBC compares them. OpenAI said it takes a commission. Perplexity has not said whether it earns on the 2025 product. ACP remains another integration, another sheet.
Are all Shopify stores in the one-click checkout?
TechCrunch talks about info on Shopify merchants shipping to the US, and a one-click checkout on program partners. Two sentences. All merchants is not an audit.
Who is the merchant of record?
Buy with Pro 2024: Perplexity intermediary that finalizes, says CNBC. PayPal product 2025: the PayPal merchant, purchases, after-sales service, and returns. Ask the question before budgeting.
What to do this week?
Catalog parity. Name the merchant of record. Separate Comet. Do not budget for all merchants. Postpone the exclusive connector.
