E-commerce
August 19, 2026
The profile "Operator by OpenAI: Autonomous Browsing Agent Review" describes an agent that drives its own browser for tasks that an e-commerce operator would click by hand: competitor pricing, supplier portals, restocking, product search on retail sites. Surface: web application. Autonomy: checkout funnel assistance. Payment: buyer's card. Pause at logins and payment. Capabilities: price comparison, automated payment, product search, multi-brand, bargain hunting. Tagged retailers: Instacart, DoorDash, OpenTable, Priceline, StubHub, Uber, all merchants. Regions: United States. How to use: log in to operator.chatgpt.com with a ChatGPT Pro account, describe a task (Instacart groceries, cheap flight to Chicago), watch the browser fill baskets, take back control at login, payment or CAPTCHA, review the summary. No gross merchandise volume (GMV). No 3-D Secure rate. No partnership audit. Neither is this article. The automated payment tag is not an automatic purchase: the human confirms. Pasting Operator into a "buying channel" metric means budgeting for a remote browser clicking your theme, not an ACP session or a waiting list of the UCP.
TechCrunch covered the launch of Operator in research preview on January 23, 2025: a generalist agent that takes control of a browser, initially for ChatGPT Pro subscribers at $200 per month in the United States, with plans to expand to Plus, Team and Enterprise tiers later. The preview opens at operator.chatgpt.com. OpenAI then wants to integrate these capabilities into ChatGPT clients. The model is called Computer-Using Agent (CUA): GPT-4o vision plus reasoning, interacting with the sites' interface, without developer APIs. Collaborations cited to respect the terms of use: DoorDash, eBay, Instacart, Priceline, StubHub, Uber. Human confirmation before an external effect (ordering, sending an email). Taking back control for the card. The agent can get stuck on a complex interface, a password, or a CAPTCHA. Two dated texts, further on. A logo in the directory. Not a Magento. Not a Shopify Agentic button.
If the idea of a software buyer is new: what agentic commerce is. The 2026 calendar: what was delivered. The other profiles: AI shopping agents. The official totals remain human shopping journeys: 2026 e-commerce statistics.
Summary
A browser embedded in a shopping directory
Operator is an agent that clicks like a human on the web. The directory categorizes it with Gemini. This is not the same contract.
Layer | What TechCrunch describes in 2025 | What the directory does with it |
|---|---|---|
Product | Search preview, CUA, dedicated browser, shopping categories, delivery, food service, or travel | Autonomous browsing agent, e-commerce operations tasks (pricing, portals, restocking) |
Purchase | Confirmation before ordering, taking back control for the card, no reliability everywhere | Assistance with the checkout tunnel, purchaser's card, CAPTCHA and login handed back to the human |
Access | Pro US 200 dollars, operator.chatgpt.com, Europe "will take time" (Altman) | ChatGPT Pro US, US regions only |
Brands | Terms of service: DoorDash, eBay, Instacart, Priceline, StubHub, Uber. Interface, no API | Instacart, DoorDash, OpenTable, Priceline, StubHub, Uber, all merchants |
The directory is right about the checkout tunnel assistance and the buyer's card: you do not install Operator in your administration interface. A Pro human opens a remote browser, clicks, and stops at the sensitive stages. The directory is wrong if automated payment is read as ChatGPT via ACP or as Gemini via UCP. A feed submitted as an application only helps Operator if it reads it. Often, it reads the page. Besides, the ChatGPT sheet mixes up Operator and the rail. Here, we separate them.
OpenTable is a directory tag. TechCrunch, in the January launch, cites eBay among the collaborations on the terms of use, not OpenTable. We are not recycling OpenTable as a sourced partnership here. All merchants: tag. The CUA does not need an API, so the agent can try any HTML. It is not a signed Magento card. Framework: what platforms must change.
Competitor pricing, supplier portals, restocking: this is the hook of the sheet, not a list of OpenAI demos in our two articles. TechCrunch talks about reservations, purchases, delivery, travel. Treat the operations hook as a directory usage (founders testing), not as an integration market. Pricing, bargain-hunting, search, and checkout tunnel filters are filters, not four Operator SKUs: purchase agents by task.
A merchant who "chooses Operator" like a payment provider has read the filter. You maintain a product sheet, an application firewall, a 3-D Secure. The agent, if it comes, is a cloud Chrome that types like a human, then a human who enters the card.

January 2025: Pro overview, CUA, no API
On January 23, 2025, TechCrunch described Operator as OpenAI's first concrete attempt at an agent that acts, after a year that Sam Altman had heralded as the year of agents. Search preview, not general availability. Pro tier in the US first. Altman, live, says that other countries will follow, and that Europe will unfortunately take time. The directory, in 2026, still labels it United States only. We are not inventing an EEA map.
The launchpad is operator.chatgpt.com. OpenAI says it wants to integrate Operator into all its ChatGPT clients. A small window shows a dedicated browser, plus explanations of actions. You can take back control. The agent does not use your local Chrome: it has its own. This is the useful difference with Claude in Chrome, which sees the buyer's already open session. Operator arrives from a remote browser. Your buyer cookies are not those of this browser, until the human logs in within the Operator window. Two possible application firewalls. Two login stories.
The CUA combines the vision of GPT-4o and reasoning from more advanced models, OpenAI says via TechCrunch. Trained to interact with the interface: buttons, menus, forms, just like a human. No API needed. For you: a JavaScript-only theme, a price inside a canvas, a variant in a custom dropdown menu—this is exactly the class of interfaces that the publisher itself says are poorly handled (detailed slideshows, complex calendars, highly customized interfaces). An agent that "compares" without an identifier invents matching: what a machine needs to compare. Here, the machine does not even necessarily read the feed. It reads what the browser renders.
Collaborations: DoorDash, eBay, Instacart, Priceline, StubHub, Uber, to respect terms of service, OpenAI says. This is not "these brands are your market". This is not "Magento is supported". These are demo names and terms of service names. Task presets in the interface: shopping, delivery, dining, travel. Useful for a Pro buyer. Useless as a payment provider specification document.
Guardrails relayed by TechCrunch. The CUA is trained to ask for confirmation before an external effect (submitting an order, sending an email). OpenAI does not expect reliability in all scenarios. Supervision required for sensitive tasks (e.g. banking). The user takes over to enter the card. Publisher allegation: Operator does not collect data and does not take screenshots. We relay this as an allegation, not as an audit. On email, active supervision. Daily and task-based rate limits, dynamic limits if multiple tasks are in parallel, quota resetting every day. Refusal, out of caution, to send emails and delete calendar events, despite a technical capacity of the CUA: no lift date. If the agent stumbles on a complex interface, a password field or a CAPTCHA, it asks the human to take over. This is not a bypass guide. This is the product stopping.
TechCrunch also places Operator in a queue of agents (Rabbit, Google, Anthropic) and notes that OpenAI was slower, partly due to security risks: automated phishing, ticket rushing, etc. OpenAI, quoted, talks about tools to limit malicious prompts, hidden instructions and phishing, and monitoring that pauses if activity appears suspicious. We do not make a procedure out of this. For you: an agent that reads your HTML can also read a banner or a comment. Keep your theme clean. Vocabulary: glossary of agentic commerce.
Google Project Mariner is mentioned in the same article as a similar approach (no card number entry by the agent). We are not citing a third URL. We note: several agent browsers, the same payment pause.
July 2025: ChatGPT agent absorbs the browser
TechCrunch covered on July 17, 2025, the launch of ChatGPT agent: a generalist agent in ChatGPT, which combines Operator's ability to click on sites and Deep Research's ability to synthesize dozens of pages. Natural language interaction. Deployment on the Thursday of the announcement to Pro, Plus, and Team subscribers. Activation: "agent mode" in the tools menu. OpenAI, in the message relayed, speaks of a computer of one's own, a remote browser heir to Operator, Deep Research synthesis, and the conversational strengths of ChatGPT. The directory, in August 2026, still documents operator.chatgpt.com as a Pro surface in the United States. This is a directory delay, not proof that the standalone preview is the only product. Check access in ChatGPT (agent mode) rather than budgeting solely for the January hostname.
What July adds, and January did not have: ChatGPT connectors (examples: Gmail, GitHub) to fetch context. A terminal. APIs to certain applications. OpenAI examples relayed: plan and buy the ingredients for a Japanese breakfast for four; analyze three competitors and produce a presentation. Slideshows: useful irony. In January, Operator "did not reliably handle" detailed slideshows. In July, the agent pitch includes editable presentations. Do not read this as "your Magento theme is now reliable." Read it as a change in product surface (ChatGPT, not just operator.chatgpt.com) and tooling (terminal, connectors), not as a service level agreement on the product sheet.
OpenAI communicated benchmark scores (Humanity's Last Exam, FrontierMath with tools) via the same article. These are publisher claims. This is not an add-to-cart rate on your theme. This is not a 3-D Secure rate. We do not recycle them as a commerce indicator.
Security, still via TechCrunch: OpenAI designates the "high capability" model in biological and chemical domains within the meaning of its Preparedness Framework, as a precaution, and activates classifiers. ChatGPT memory is disabled for this agent, says OpenAI, to limit the risk of exfiltration via prompt injection. We do not make this an attack manual, nor a buying argument. For a merchant: this is not a service level agreement. It is a product still treated as dangerous by its publisher.
TechCrunch points out that early agents have often disappointed on complex tasks. Until proven otherwise on your journey, regard Operator and ChatGPT agent as a browser that can get stuck, not as a cost-per-acquisition channel. Product search, if a report or tab cites your product sheet: product search. Real Q&As help any synthesizer. An "Operator only" connector does not.
The only e-commerce moment: your HTML, not a feed from the ACP
The only e-commerce moment, for you, is a remote browser rendering your page, clicking, filling out the form, and then stopping. Operator does not cash out with a mandate from the PCA. The card is the buyer's card, typed by the buyer.
Your product page: price, stock, variants readable without mandatory JavaScript. Otherwise, the CUA hallucinates or blocks, exactly as the editor admits on non-standard interfaces. Same lesson as for Claude, with a browser that is not the customer's.
Your web application firewall: a burst of product pages from a cloud infrastructure, no mouse on the buyer's workstation. Bot policy, not an Operator button. Blocking any headless browser also stops other agents. Allowing everything opens up scraping. Test the logs: what needs to be logged.
Your checkout funnel: 3-D Secure and card entry: the human, says the product. Do not mix it up with a Genspark pre-fill or a PCA session. The automated payment label in the directory means: the agent pushes up to the form, not: it pays by itself.
Checkout funnel agents: agents for the checkout funnel. Operator is categorized there because it clicks all the way to confirmation. Manus, its sheet says, stops at the report. Two depths. The same word: browse. Manus even has a "browser operator" menu line: it is not this OpenAI sheet. If both retrieve your theme, the firewall procedure looks similar. The Manus homepage job remains the deliverable (presentations), not the Pay button.
Theme: a Shopify storefront readable by an LLM. Here, readable by a CUA seeing the page in a remote browser. A clean JSON-LD still helps. A CSS badge does not help. Rails: how protocols differ. Operator is not a protocol. It is a graphical interface.
After human confirmation, the dispute is yours. Operator did not cash out via a Shared Payment Token. Reason codes: where agentic commerce still breaks. An agent that misread a size, followed by a human who validated too quickly, looks like a human order. Do not attribute it to an "Operator channel" that you did not turn on.
Price comparison and bargain hunting, in the directory, are uses of the same browser: price comparison, bargain hunting. This is not Honey. Honey injects a code into the buyer's browser. Operator opens another browser, fills in, stops. Two artifacts. One word: checkout funnel.
A directory prompt "cheapest flight to Chicago" is not a GTIN. A "usual groceries from Instacart" is not your long tail. If two product sheets diverge, the CUA decides with what it sees. Do not pay for the customer service of a navigation that you did not feed with true fields.
Not the ACP, not the UCP, not a list of browsers
Do not merge the logos.
Surface | Contract | At your end |
|---|---|---|
Operator and ChatGPT agent (browser) | CUA, page HTML, login pause, map or CAPTCHA, preview then agent mode | Product sheet, application firewall, 3-D Secure, theme. No ACP application |
ChatGPT via ACP | Sessions, catalog, delegated payment, HTTP notifications. Another sheet | Application, feed, token. Not the CUA |
Gemini via UCP | Named rail, waiting list, merchant of record: the brand, according to Google | Merchant Center, native or integrated checkout tunnel. Not operator.chatgpt.com |
Claude in Chrome | Extension, buyer session, request before purchase | Same interface family, other IP address (residential), other cookies |
Genspark | Workspace for knowledge workers, browser tunnel according to the directory | Same generalist family, other account |
A pitch like "we put you in Operator" can sell a readable theme, a firewall allowlist, a directory listing, or a Pro or Plus license for your price intelligence teams. Four deliverables for a single word. Ask which one. The ChatGPT sheet has already said: three roles under one logo. This one documents the browser role, including after July 2025 when OpenAI stacks it into ChatGPT agent.
"Autonomous" in the title versus "hands control back" in the user guide: keep the pause. Purchase autonomy is not an OpenAI payment tunnel on your SKU. Deep Research in the July agent is not a Direct Offer. A competing presentation is not a GTIN.
We do not rank Operator against Claude, Genspark, or Manus. Three browsers, three accounts, three robot policies. A directory ranking is not a laboratory. If your slide merges logos, you are merging three User-Agents.
What this sheet does not measure
This sheet does not measure anything that matters for a sale.
Volume: no gross merchandise volume (GMV). The July benchmarks and the $200 tier from January are not your traffic.
Coverage: all merchants, Instacart, and Uber: launch labels and terms of use. This is not your Magento long tail. OpenTable in the directory is not sourced from our two URLs.
Reliability: OpenAI itself says, in January, that the CUA is not reliable everywhere. TechCrunch, in July, points out that early agents break down in the real world. No abandonment rate published here.
Europe: Altman, January, "Europe will take time". US-only badge. We are not fabricating a 2026 deployment in the EEA.
Do not budget Operator as a channel with a known cost-per-acquisition. We do not publish one. A Verified listing does not buy a spot in the Instacart presets, nor a daily CUA quota.
"Boldest attempt", "far more capable", benchmark scores: superlatives and vendor claims. We do not recycle them. A terminal plus GitHub is not an audit of your 3-D Secure. A Japanese breakfast is not a SKU.
Automated payment on the card is not a completed order rate. It is a label. The user manual says: the human confirms. Keep the label, discard the fantasy of automatic buying.
Three gestures, not an Operator channel
This week, by mechanism, not by logo.
If a CUA bot has already crawled your pages: read the product page logs. A web application firewall. Five SKUs: can a remote browser compare them without JPEG and without a broken dropdown menu? Replay the path up to 3-D Secure with a human. Not an attack procedure.
Catalog: price, feature, and review parity between page, feed, and structured data. Useful for any agent, CUA or ACP. Not an Operator connector.
Governance: ban the "autonomous Operator channel, automated payment" slide without saying: remote browser plus human pause plus, since July 2025, agent mode in ChatGPT. Separate ACP and CUA. Separate Claude (local Chrome) and Operator (dedicated browser).
The single test: would this work still be useful if OpenAI shut down operator.chatgpt.com and only kept ChatGPT agent, or vice versa? A real feed, a readable theme, a human purchasing path, an explicit firewall, yes. An exclusive Operator connector, no.
Name the owners: security or CDN for the path, merchandising for the fields, payments for 3-D Secure, not a single "Operator owner" who mixes an Uber preset and a User-Agent.
If you only have one hour: read the datasheet (operator.chatgpt.com, US Pro, CAPTCHA rendered to the human). Read both TechCrunch dates (January 23, July 17). Do not follow the Chicago flight instructions like a payment provider specification sheet. Nor should you follow a preview hostname as if it were eternal.
You don't turn on Operator like a channel
You don't turn on Operator like a channel. Pro users (then Plus and Team, said to be July) open a remote browser, or they don't. They have quotas. They get stuck. They enter their card themselves. You hold a product sheet. The badges are not buttons.
If a salesperson promises to place you "in Operator", ask: theme, allowlist, internal ChatGPT license for monitoring, or directory listing. Four deliverables for a single word.
UCP and ACP are chosen elsewhere. For Operator, if there is a purchase, the protocol is already your brand payment tunnel, with a human at the checkout. Postponing the rail is not postponing Q&A, nor a firewall, nor a theme that reads without JavaScript.
After the click, it's your after-sales service. The directory didn't collect the payment. Do not attribute a size return to it. Do not attribute a FrontierMath score to it.
A browser index, not a ranking
Operator is fragmenting: January preview (operator.chatgpt.com, US Pro, CUA), consumer terms of service collaborations, directory exploitation hook (supplier portals), and July's ChatGPT agent (agent mode, Deep Research, connectors, terminal). The "research preview" launch did not "prove" your channel. An Instacart preset did not "replace" Phia. This sheet is a starting point: remote browser first, purchase second, not a set track.
Treat it as an index: which artifact (cloud recovery or nothing), where the payment takes place (merchant, human), which fields are missing, which user interface (January hostname or agent mode). Four questions. Not a ranking of autonomous agents.
You can ignore Operator and hold Merchant Center. You can block headless browsers and let your teams buy Pro to click competitor sites. The directory does not decide. Your firewall and your feed do.
Next, open the ChatGPT sheet (the business of the ACP) and Claude (the other interface). Establish the contract, not the automated payment badge.
Theme and firewall first, hostname second
The owner is not "growth Operator". It is security plus merchandising plus payments, and, if someone buys Pro for intelligence, IT. A single owner mixes a Chicago flight and a User-Agent.
Users, if there are any, come according to their task graph (shopping, dining, travel, July presentations), not according to the directory. You do not turn on five capabilities. You maintain a catalog that a CUA can see, or not.
If the committee wants a figure: there isn't one here for the purchase. 200 dollars a month is not gross merchandise volume (GMV). A benchmark score is not your market. A channel is budgeted on attributed orders, not on an autonomous navigation slogan.
The test for the following week: a product sheet, a CDN log, a human who takes over at 3-D Secure or who does not arrive. If you do not have that, you do not have a channel. You have a sheet, a preview hostname, and an agent mode menu on their end.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Operator an AI buying agent?
In the directory, it is classified as such, with the automated payment label. In the two TechCrunch articles, it is a generalist browser agent (then ChatGPT agent). Purchasing (Instacart, Chicago flight, all merchants) is a use case and a profile instruction, not a merchant rail.
Does it process payments on its own?
No, according to the product described: confirmation before ordering, manual takeover for the card, CAPTCHA handed back to the human. The profile says checkout assistance, buyer's card. Not UCP. Not ACP. No automatic purchase. Automated payment is just a label.
Operator, is it ChatGPT via ACP?
No. ACP is a session and delegated payment language, documented on the other profile. Operator and ChatGPT agent click HTML. A merchant may cross both in a buyer's mind. It is not the same integration.
Operator, is it Claude in Chrome?
Same family of interface (clicks, forms, pause). Claude runs in the buyer's Chrome, with their cookies. Operator, in January, opens a remote dedicated browser. Two IP addresses, two connections, two firewalls. Do not merge them.
Should Operator be whitelisted in the web application firewall?
Only if you have a policy and a signal. Blocking all headless browsers also stops other agents. Letting everything through opens up scraping. Test the logs. No button in the directory. And read July 2025: the user interface surface has shifted toward ChatGPT agent.
Is operator.chatgpt.com still the product?
This is the surface of the January preview, still written in the directory. TechCrunch, on July 17, 2025, describes ChatGPT agent as the unified system that takes over Operator's browser. Check the current access in ChatGPT. We don't have an OpenAI HTTP 200 URL here to tell if the standalone hostname is shut down.
What to do this week?
Catalog parity. Readable theme. Human purchase journey. Logs. Do not budget all merchants. Separate CUA and ACP. Postpone the exclusive connector.
