How to handle customer questions about PayPal or wallet fees

July 1, 2026

"PayPal added fees, you are lying about the displayed price." "Apple Pay charged more than the cart total." "Unknown line on my statement after Shop Pay." Three tickets where a poorly explained perceived wallet fee discrepancy generates scam accusations and chargebacks.

The PayPal and digital e-commerce wallet fee support covers currency conversion, statement descriptors, order amount discrepancies, and third-party financer fees. Distinct from PayPal refund (#777): here, we focus on transparency of fees and discrepancies perceived at checkout or on statements.

This guide #779 covers policy DWFEE-SUP, flow WF-1 to WF-8, and the DWFEE-MAP matrix. Customer support pair of the future with bot DWFEE (#780).

Summary

Why do wallet fees generate tickets?

The customer pays via PayPal, Apple Pay, or Shop Pay, and sees a different amount on their statement or wallet activity. The agent denies any store fees, ignores the PayPal conversion, or confuses the PSP descriptor with merchant overcharging. Without a SOP, support routes this as a declined payment or refund (#777) instead of explaining the third-party wallet discrepancy.

Five typical wallet fee frictions

  • PayPal currency conversion: Wallet FX differs from cart map

  • Statement amount discrepancy: Total order vs. perceived debit map

  • Unknown descriptor: Unclear bank line name map

  • Third-party credit provider fees: PayPal/Apple, not merchant map

  • Accusations of hidden fees: Customer suspects store of overcharging map

PayPal and wallets apply their own conversion and funding rules (PayPal, 2026 User Agreement). Without DWFEE-MAP, agents improvise the source of the discrepancy.
