What is a product bundle? E-commerce definition
June 4, 2026
A bundle (product bundle, pack, kit) groups several products sold together, often at a promotional price or with a "complete routine" logic. In e-commerce, it is a classic lever to increase AOV, clear inventory, or simplify customer choice. On Shopify, bundles can be native, via apps, or modeled as a single multi-SKU product.
Summary
Definition: bundle, kit, cross-sell, upsell
A bundle offers a package deal: the customer purchases multiple items in a single action, with a perceived benefit (savings, time saved, product coherence).
Common formats. Fixed bundle: products A + B + C, defined pack price; Starter kit / routine: curated selection ("starter set"); Mix and match: choose X items from a list (3 for 2); BOGO (Buy One Get One): buy X, get Y (promotional variant); and Multipack: same SKU in quantity (6 bottles), rather than an assortment.
Key distinctions. Bundle vs cross-sell: a bundle is a pre-packaged offer; cross-sell suggests a complementary product at the time of purchase; Bundle vs upsell: upsell pushes a superior or more expensive version; the bundle adds distinct products; Bundle product vs cart discount: a bundle displays an identifiable pack; the discount applies to the total without a pack narrative; and Physical bundle vs virtual bundle: shipped together or linked in the admin without warehouse pre-assembly.
Why product bundling is important in an online store
Bundles act on the value per transaction without increasing the acquisition cost.
AOV: higher average basket value if the bundle offer is attractive; Overall margin: a moderate discount on a pack can remain profitable vs a single bestseller (gross profit); Catalog discovery: get secondary SKUs tested; Stock: sell off unsold items or end-of-line products in a pack; Simplicity: reduce choice paralysis ("complete routine"); and Marketing: clear campaign angle (gift, BFCM, launch).
Counterpart: a poorly calibrated bundle cannibalizes individual sales or compresses the margin too much. Measure AOV, margin per order, and bundle choice rate vs single products.
In a glossary logic, the product bundle must be understood as a practical reference point: the term helps name a frequent situation, distinguish it from related concepts, and link the definition to concrete decisions in an online store. The interest is therefore not only theoretical; it also allows for better organization of the content, tools, and indicators used by an e-commerce team.
How to structure a product bundle
Bundle pricing rules. Visible discount: crossed-out separate price vs pack price (psychological pricing); Profitability threshold: simulate the cumulative COGS of the pack; Do not devalue: a permanent -50% on any bundle harms premium perception; and Limit in time: seasonal packs or launches.
UX Placement: product page ("Complete your routine"), cart, post-purchase, or targeted pop-up. Test placement and wording.
Managing product bundles on Shopify
Multiple approaches on Shopify (Shopify Help Center). Shopify native bundles: link variants into a sellable pack; inventory synchronized by component; Manual "bundle" product: a product page with a description of the contents; fulfillment broken down into SKUs (less automated); Apps (Shopify apps): Bundler, Wide Bundles, etc. for mix-and-match, product page widgets; Shopify Discounts: Buy X Get Y, discount based on quantity or collection (similar to BOGO); and Shopify Functions (Plus): advanced bundle logic at checkout.
Technical points. Inventory: decrement each component when the pack is sold; Shipping: package weight and dimensions of the bundle; Returns: policy if only one item from the pack is returned; and Google Shopping: bundle product feed vs. individual items (avoid duplicates).
On Shopify, the main challenge is translating this concept into a clean, maintainable setup that is understandable for the team. The merchant must avoid scattered settings, document important choices, and regularly verify that what is displayed to the customer matches what is managed in the admin.
In brief
Bundle = several products sold together, often at a pack price; Levers: AOV, discovery, stock, simplicity of purchase; Distinct from cross-sell, upsell, and simple multipack; Shopify: native bundles, apps, Buy X Get Y discounts; and Compose with coherence, measure margin, manage stocks and returns.
In summary, the product bundle is a simple concept in appearance, but important for structuring an online store. Well-mastered, it improves the understanding of the catalog, the quality of the customer experience, and the coherence of marketing or operational actions.

Associated Terms
AOV: main KPI impacted by bundles; Cross-sell: one-off complementary sale; Upsell: trade-up or premium version; and Discount: underlying reduction mechanism.
FAQ
Bundle and kit: same thing?
Similar usage. Kit emphasizes a "ready-to-use" selection; bundle is the broader e-commerce term (promo packs, assortments).
How to create a bundle on Shopify?
Use native Bundles (Products > Bundles) or a dedicated app. Simple alternative: single product describing the content + manual inventory management.
Does a bundle always have to be cheaper?
Often yes to encourage group purchasing, but a "limited edition" pack can be at the same price with added value (exclusive accessory, gift wrapping).
Bundle or free shipping to increase AOV?
Both work. The bundle pushes specific products; the free shipping threshold lets the customer choose how to complete the cart. Test both.
