A discount refers to a price reduction granted to a customer: percentage discount, fixed amount, free delivery, promo code, launch offer, or automatic discount. In e-commerce, discounts can stimulate conversion, trigger a purchase, or clear stock. However, they must be used with moderation, as they influence margins, perceived value, and purchasing habits.

Summary

Definition of discount

A discount is a temporary or conditional reduction of the initial price. It can be visible directly on the product page, applied in the cart, reserved for a promotional code, or triggered automatically based on rules: minimum amount, specific collection, first order, or customer segment.

There are several forms of reduction. A 10% discount, a €15 rebate, a "buy 2, get 1 free" offer, a slashed price, or free shipping all fall under a discounting logic, even if their perceived effect by the customer differs.

Concept

Role

Promo code

Discount entered by the customer at checkout.

Automatic discount

Discount applied without customer action.

Slashed price

Comparison between the old price and the reduced price.

Free shipping

Economic benefit applied to shipping costs.

A discount is not just a commercial mechanic. It is also a signal sent to the market: urgency, opportunity, clearance, loyalty, or launch.

Why discounting is important in e-commerce

A discount can remove a barrier to purchase. A hesitant visitor may finalize their order if a time-limited benefit makes the decision easier. It can also encourage a higher shopping cart value when tied to a threshold, for example free shipping from €80.

Discounts also serve to liven up a commercial calendar: sales, Black Friday, launch, brand anniversary, end of line, or reactivation campaign. They allow you to create a reason to purchase when the product alone is not enough to trigger a sense of urgency.

But its repeated use can weaken the brand. If customers learn that a discount always arrives after a few days, they may delay their purchases. A discount strategy must therefore protect the margin and the perceived value.

Discount types and commercial effects

Not all discounts produce the same effect. A percentage discount seems attractive on low prices, whereas a fixed amount can be clearer on a high cart value. Free shipping addresses a very concrete friction point: the final cost at checkout.

Conditional discounts are often healthier than generic discounts. They can support the average order value, reward loyal customers, or target a specific collection without devaluing the whole catalog. The choice depends on the objective: converting, increasing AOV, clearing stock, or reactivating an audience.

  • Percentage discount for highly visible campaigns.

  • Fixed amount for high cart values.

  • Free shipping to reduce friction at checkout.

Discounts on Shopify

Shopify allows you to create discount codes and automatic discounts directly from the admin. Merchants can define the discount type, the eligible products, the dates, the eligibility conditions, the usage limits, and the targeted customers.

Discounts can be applied to a product, a collection, an entire order, or shipping fees. Advanced features, apps, and Shopify Plus allow you to go further with more specific logic, such as stacked promotions, B2B offers, or complex cart rules.

Before launching a promotion, you must test the checkout. The code should work on the correct products, reject expected exclusions, and clearly display the saved amount.

Points of vigilance to be aware of

Discounting must be managed alongside margin. A markdown that increases sales but destroys profitability is not a sustainable success. Payment, shipping, return, and acquisition costs must be taken into account before validating an operation.

Clarity is also essential. A code that doesn't work, a hidden condition, or a discrepancy between the advertisement and the checkout creates frustration. A good discount is simple to understand, easy to apply, and consistent with the brand strategy.
