What is a coupon? E-commerce definition

E-commerce coupon: Anglo-Saxon definition, digital discount voucher, aggregator sites, Shopify discount codes, and margin management.

A coupon (discount coupon, often translated as promo code or voucher in French) is a conditional commercial benefit granted to the buyer: percentage discount, fixed amount, free shipping, or free product, in exchange for respecting rules (dates, minimum cart value, eligible products). In e-commerce, the coupon is most often materialized by a promo code entered at checkout or applied via an automatic link.

Summary

Definition: coupon, voucher, discount code

The term coupon comes from physical retail (paper coupons cut out from newspapers). Online, it refers to the same principle: a right to a discount activated by an action (entering a code, clicking a link, scanning a QR code).

Common forms are structured around several complementary elements.

Digital coupon: email or SMS code (WELCOME10). Automatic coupon: discount applied without entering a code via the URL /discount/CODE. Unique coupon: generated for one customer (single use).

Public coupon: the same code for everyone (SALES30). Partner coupon: influencer, affiliate, press.

Useful distinctions.

Coupon vs. discount voucher: coupon = Anglo-Saxon term; discount voucher = common French formulation. Similar meaning in e-commerce. Coupon vs. promo code: the coupon is the marketing benefit; the promo code is the technical character string entered. Often interchangeable. Coupon vs. discount: discount = backend rule (Shopify Discount); coupon = offer perceived on the merchant/customer side.

Merchant coupon vs. manufacturer coupon: in retail, the manufacturer sometimes reimburses the merchant; in DTC Shopify, the merchant bears the cost of the discount. Coupon vs. gift card: the card is prepaid credit; the coupon reduces the price. Coupon vs. slashed price: open promotion on the product page with no code required.

Why coupons matter in e-commerce

Coupons remain one of the most universal levers to convert and retain customers, but if poorly managed, they can cannibalize margins.

Conversion: unlocking a purchase (welcome offer, cart abandonment). Attribution: coupon code by channel (PODCAST15, META20). AOV: "$15 off from $100" encourages filling the cart.

Loyalty: birthday coupon, loyalty tier. Seasonality: BFCM, sales, launches. Competition: buyers compare available coupons before purchasing.

Major risk: coupon leakage. A VIP coupon found on an aggregator site (Honey, RetailMeNot, deal forums) can be used massively and erode the margin (gross profit). Strategy: targeted coupons, limited duration, unique codes.

Coupon types and business uses

Online coupon ecosystem.

Email / SMS: personalized post-purchase or win-back coupon. Browser extensions: automatically offer codes at checkout (friction or conversion depending on the case). Aggregator sites: list public codes, sometimes obsolete.

Ads: "Use coupon SAVE20" in Meta/Google creatives. Packaging: paper coupon insert with QR code to the shop.

Types of coupon discounts: %, fixed amount, free shipping, Buy X Get Y (Shopify).

Coupons on Shopify

Shopify uses the label Discount codes (codes de réduction) in the admin, which is the functional equivalent of e-commerce coupons.

Creation: Admin > Discounts > Create discount > Discount code (Shopify Help Center).

Key parameters are structured around several complementary elements.

Value (%, fixed, shipping, BXGY). Eligible products/collections. Minimum order, customer eligibility (first order, segment).

Total and per-customer usage limits. Combinations with other discounts. Start/end dates.

Coupon application without entry: URL https://boutique.com/discount/CODE redirects and applies the discount to the cart. Apps (ReCharge, Smile.io, Klaviyo) generate dynamic coupons for subscriptions and loyalty.

Checkout: standard "Discount code" field. Shopify Plus allows display customization. Hiding the field reduces opportunistic coupon use but frustrates legitimate customers.

Key watchpoints for protecting margins

Objective per coupon: acquisition, cart recovery, AOV, loyalty; measure separately. Unique codes: for sensitive offers (leakage prevention). Usage limit: on public and influencer coupons.

Test rules: minimum cart, exclusions, stackability. Align communication: consistent banner, email, checkout. Deactivate: expired or compromised coupons immediately.

Simulate margin: before an aggressive coupon campaign.

In brief

Coupon: = conditional discount advantage (Anglo-Saxon term, common in e-commerce). FR equivalent: bon de réduction; technical: promo code / discount code. Levers: conversion, AOV, attribution, loyalty; risk: leakage and margin.

Shopify: Discount codes, /discount/CODE link, discount reports. Targeted, limited, measured coupons; avoid permanent generalized promotions.

FAQ

Coupon and promo code: the same thing?

In e-commerce practice, yes in the majority of cases. The coupon refers to the marketing offer; the promo code is the string entered to activate it.

What does Shopify call coupons?

In the admin: Discount codes. Merchant-facing checkout: "Discount code" or "Promo code" depending on theme translation.

How to limit coupon leakage?

Unique codes per customer, short duration, overall cap, eligible segments, no permanent public coupon on the entire catalog.

Can a coupon be applied via a link?

Yes: https://yourstore.com/discount/CODE applies the discount to the cart on Shopify (redirection based on configuration).
