What is a coupon? E-commerce definition

A coupon (discount coupon, often translated as discount voucher) is a conditional commercial benefit granted to the buyer: percentage discount, fixed amount, free delivery, or free product, in exchange for compliance with rules (dates, minimum basket, eligible products). In e-commerce, the coupon is most often in the form of a promo code entered at checkout or applied via an automatic link.

Major risk: coupon leakage. A VIP coupon found on an aggregator site (Honey, RetailMeNot, deal forums) can be used massively and erode the margin (gross profit). Strategy: targeted coupons, limited duration, unique codes.

Objective per coupon: acquisition, recover cart, AOV, loyalty; measure separately. Unique codes: for sensitive offers (leakage prevention). Usage limit: on public and influencer coupons.

Test rules: cart minimum, exclusions, stacking. Align communication: banner, email, consistent checkout. Deactivate: expired or compromised coupons immediately.

Simulate margin: before aggressive coupon campaign.
