Sparky: the Walmart catalog assistant, not an open rail

Sparky: the Walmart catalog assistant, not an open rail

August 19, 2026

The "Sparky · AI shopping agent" card describes Walmart's AI shopping assistant, "now" integrated into ChatGPT and Gemini (directory label). Interface: web application. Autonomy: suggestions. Payment: buyer's card. Capabilities: search, pricing, review summary, good deals, restocking. Merchant: Walmart. Regions: United States. How to use: Walmart app or site, Sparky icon, question (comparison, gift, recipe), Walmart products, add to cart, payment with card and delivery already on file with Walmart. No Gross Merchandise Volume (GMV). No average basket rate. No Gemini audit. Nor this article either. Suggestions, here, means: Sparky is not a payment provider. The human pays at Walmart. Sticking Sparky into an "agent channel" indicator means budgeting for a Walmart marketplace listing, or an Instant Checkout ChatGPT announced separately, not a button on the UCP.

Walmart introduced Sparky on June 6, 2025: generative shopping assistant, smiling "Ask Sparky" button in the app, all categories, search, review summary, occasions (swimsuit, toy, weather and outfit). Product questions, comparisons, recommendations to add to cart. Soon, Walmart said then: automatic restocking, service booking, multimodal text, image, audio and video. This is not yet the day-one product. TechCrunch covered a Walmart and OpenAI partnership on October 14, 2025: buying from Walmart in ChatGPT via Instant Checkout, buy button, linked accounts, groceries (not fresh), essentials, third-party sellers later in the fall. Sparky is the separate Walmart assistant, with a roadmap for restocking, services, and multimodal. Two texts. One logo in the directory. Gemini: badge, not a URL here. Not your Magento. Not the ACP.

If the idea of a software buyer is new: what agentic commerce is. The 2026 calendar: what was delivered. The other cards: AI shopping agents. Official totals remain human shopping journeys: 2026 e-commerce statistics.

Summary

A marketplace chat, pasted into an agent directory

Sparky is the assistant for the Walmart store. The directory groups it with Gemini. It is not the same contract.

Roadmap

Automatic restocking, services, multimodal: "soon" or "will expand"

Restocking capability as if it were already the business

The directory is right: internal to Walmart, Walmart cart, you install nothing. A buyer opens the app. If your SKU is not at Walmart, Sparky does not "choose" you. The directory is wrong if we read "ChatGPT and Gemini extension" as a single product, or as the UCP and ACP. June describes the app. October describes Instant Checkout "soon". Gemini is in neither of the two URLs. Place framework: what platforms must change. Here Walmart has already chosen. You change the listing, not the Magento firewall.

The search, price, and deal filters are not three Sparky SKUs: task-based shopping agents. Deal hunting is not in the June post. Rufus is the Amazon twin: same catalog chat family, different garden, different icon (and an Alexa renaming that Sparky does not have here).

A merchant who "chooses Sparky" like a payment provider has read the directory. You sell on Walmart.com, or you don't. The chat does not turn on in Seller Center like a Shopify Agentic channel.

June 2025: Ask Sparky, the catalog, not the open web

On June 6, 2025, Walmart introduces Sparky as a generative assistant, an evolution in commerce, customer first. Starting this week: all categories, Ask Sparky button in the app. Item search, review summaries, planning for occasions. Editor examples: teams playing tonight and the right jersey; beach weather and the outfit. Product questions, comparisons, "informed" choices, adding to cart "with confidence." This is how it works (question, suggestions, cart). It is also a walled garden: the products are Walmart's.

Sparky joins an existing suite: search bar queries, review summaries, descriptions, product comparisons. So Sparky is not "Walmart's AI" all by itself. A poor product detail sheet feeds both the chat and the search results page. An empty review produces an empty summary. Marketplace feed: what a machine needs to make comparisons. Here, the machine reads Walmart, not your Magento JSON-LD. Search: product search. Prices in the Walmart catalog, not 40,000 sites: price comparison.

The "coming soon" from June: personalization, automatic replenishment of essentials, booking services, multimodal. Futuristic examples: "what's for dinner" becomes a weekly meal plan with ingredients added to the cart; a leaky faucet gets tutorials and tools delivered the same day; party ideas with theme, decorations, food, gifts, budget. Roadmap. This is not a 2026 service commitment. Replenishment on the product detail sheet is a badge. We read it as an intention, not as a measured automatic purchase. Vocabulary: agentic commerce glossary.

"Trusted partner," "just the beginning," "paving the way": slogans. Walmart also says Sparky is a foundation. We do not turn this into Gross Merchandise Volume (GMV). Directory surface: web app. Launch: app. The user guide adds the website. We do not assume audited desktop parity.

Bargain hunting: bargain hunting is not the focus of this press release. "Everyday low prices" in the other text is Walmart branding, not a Honey coupon.

October 2025: Instant Checkout ChatGPT is not Ask Sparky

Four months later, TechCrunch describes another funnel: buying Walmart products in ChatGPT, Instant Checkout, buy button after account linking. Groceries (not fresh), essentials, and more. Third-party marketplace sellers planned for later in the fall. McMillon, quoted: the search bar and long list are over; native AI, multimedia, personal, contextual experience; Walmart is running towards it with Sparky and with this OpenAI partnership. Two paths in the same sentence from the CEO. The directory puts them under an extension.

TechCrunch separates them: the ChatGPT feature is not the only way to buy with AI. Sparky, recently introduced, helps to discover, compare, and buy. It will expand to replenishment, service booking, multimodal. This overlaps with the "soon" from June. It is still not an automatic order rate. Rails: how protocols differ. ChatGPT Instant Checkout is not, in these two URLs, a Stripe ACP specification. Do not merge it with the ChatGPT sheet. Do not merge it with Gemini's UCP. Gemini, once again, is not sourced here.

Checkout funnel: agents for the checkout funnel. In the app, the user guide says: tap, Walmart cart, saved payment. Suggestions. Buyer's card. In ChatGPT, October says Instant Checkout and "Walmart will handle the rest". Two depths. One same word: Sparky. Buy with Pro is another in-chat purchase. Buy for Me plays your site outside of Amazon. Sparky, in the app, remains within Walmart.

"Soon" in October 2025. The directory, in August 2026, says the extension is already there. We do not have, in these two URLs, the general availability date for ChatGPT or Gemini. Do not copy "now embedded" as an audit. Check the buy button in ChatGPT, and Ask Sparky in the app, as two controls.

On your end: the Walmart listing, not the Magento listing

At home, if you sell on Walmart, there are three artifacts. The directory only shows a chat of them.

  • The listing: title, attributes, images, price, inventory. Sparky and the search bar read them. An incorrectly filled adjustment produces a response, then a real cart.

  • The reviews: summary promised since June. A poor corpus becomes a conversational "truth".

  • The Walmart checkout funnel: account, saved payment, pickup or delivery. Suggestions. You are a Walmart seller (1P) or Walmart marketplace seller, not the merchant of record for a Sparky chat.

Magento Firewall: out of scope for Ask Sparky. Retrieval is internal to Walmart. For Instant Checkout ChatGPT, the journey does not go through your theme either, says the October story (Walmart handles the rest). Retailer logs: what needs to be logged only if you are still mixing a browser agent and Sparky in the same ticket. Operator clicks your HTML. Sparky does not.

Post-purchase, Walmart customer service or seller depending on the listing. A chat that misread a size does not invent a "Sparky" reason code. Breakages: where agentic commerce still breaks.

Shopify storefront: out of scope unless you are also on Shop. Shop is the app of the other network. Two wallets. One same word: app.

Not Rufus, not UCP, no automatic purchase

Do not merge the gardens, nor the 2025 buttons.

Other listings, other specifications

Gemini: directory badge, not our two URLs

A sales pitch "we will put you in Sparky" can sell a Walmart listing audit, a marketplace ad budget, a directory listing, or an Instant Checkout watch. Four deliverables for a single word. Ask which one.

"Agentic" in the June title versus suggestions and adding to cart: keep the cart human. Automatic replenishment was "soon". This is not automatic Gemini purchasing.

What this sheet does not measure

This sheet measures nothing of what matters for a fair sale on the marketplace.

  • Volume: no Sparky gross merchandise value (GMV). Average baskets +35% are circulating elsewhere. Not in our two URLs. We do not import them.

  • Gemini: directory badge. Absent from June and October here.

  • ChatGPT General Availability: October says "soon". The directory says "now". No sourced switchover date here.

  • Europe: US application, US Instant Checkout in the narrative. US badge. We are not inventing a rollout in the EEA.

Do not budget Sparky as a channel with a known cost per acquisition. We do not publish one. A Verified listing does not buy a spot in Ask Sparky, nor an Instant Checkout slot, nor an automatic replenishment.

"Trusted partner", "just the beginning": June slogans. A directory replenishment is not an automatic basket rate.

Three gestures, not a Sparky channel

This week, by mechanism, not by logo.

  • If you sell on Walmart: five items: title, attributes, reviews. Can a chatbot compare two SKUs without inventing? Same work as for Rufus, different administration.

  • Two buyer controls: Ask Sparky in the app. Buy in ChatGPT, if the "soon" from October has become a button. Do not merge them in one slide.

  • Governance: ban "Walmart agent, UCP, and Gemini extension" without saying: catalog chat; Instant Checkout announced separately; Gemini not sourced here. Separate Amazon Buy for Me.

The unique test: would this work still be useful if Walmart removed the word agentic from the press release and only kept the search bar and review summaries? A true product sheet, yes. An exclusive Sparky connector, no. Walmart does not document one here.

Name the owners: Walmart marketplace merchandising, marketplace ads, not a single "Sparky owner" who mixes internal ChatGPT Enterprise and a User-Agent.

If you only have one hour: read June 6 (Ask Sparky, restocking soon). Read October 14 (Instant Checkout soon, Sparky separate). Do not follow Gemini like a specification sheet.

You don't turn on Sparky like a channel

You don’t turn on Sparky like a channel. US customers open the Walmart app, or they don’t. They link ChatGPT, or they don’t. You hold a listing. The pills are not buttons.

If a vendor promises to place you "in Sparky," ask for: a Walmart catalog audit, Instant Checkout monitoring, or a directory listing. Three deliverables for a single word.

UCP and ACP are chosen elsewhere. For Sparky, if there is a purchase in the app, the protocol is already the Walmart checkout funnel. Delaying the rail is not delaying an attribute, nor a review.

After the cart, it's Walmart or vendor customer service. The directory didn't process the payment. Don't attribute a size return to it. Don't attribute a +35% average cart value to it.

A workplace index, not an agent ranking

Sparky is fragmenting: June 2025 (Ask Sparky, reviews, cart), restocking and multimodal roadmap, October 2025 (Instant Checkout ChatGPT coming soon), directory listing (Gemini extension, restocking, web app). The evening jersey has not "proven" your channel. A dinner plan has not "beaten" Rufus. This listing is a starting point: Walmart's walled garden first, OpenAI chat second, not an open track.

Treat it like an index: which button (app or ChatGPT), where the payment takes place (Walmart), which directory fields are missing, which badge is a badge. Four questions. Not a ranking against Gemini.

You can ignore Sparky and stick to Merchant Center. You can refuse the Walmart marketplace and face another agent. The directory does not decide. Your Walmart catalog, if you sell there, does.

Next, open Rufus (the other marketplace chat) and ChatGPT (the other Instant Checkout listing). Lay down the contract, not the restocking badge.

The sheet first, the extension next

The owner is not "Sparky growth". It is Walmart Marketplace merchandising plus, if Instant Checkout matters to you, e-commerce. A sole proprietor mixes a smiley button and a ChatGPT account.

Users, if any, come via a query in the app or in an OpenAI chat, not via the directory. You don't turn on five capabilities. You hold a catalog that a Walmart assistant can cite, or not.

If the committee wants a figure: there isn't one here. A channel is budgeted on attributed orders, not on an agentic slogan.

The test for the following week: five items, a product detail page question in Ask Sparky, a Walmart cart. If ChatGPT has a buy button, a second test. If you don't have that, you don't have a channel. You have a listing, and two 2025 dates.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Sparky an AI buying agent?

In the directory, it is classified as such. At Walmart, in June 2025, it is Ask Sparky in the app: questions, reviews, comparisons, cart. Suggestions. Walmart checkout funnel.

Does it process payments separately?

The listing says buyer's card, registered Walmart checkout funnel. June mentions adding to cart. October, for ChatGPT, mentions Instant Checkout coming soon. Not UCP. Not ACP in these URLs. No automatic purchasing.

Is Sparky the ChatGPT integration?

These are two separate announcements. McMillon cites them together. TechCrunch separates them. The directory merges them. Gemini is not in our two texts.

Is Sparky Rufus?

Same family: marketplace catalog chat, United States, suggestions. Different retailer, different button, different ChatGPT partnership. Do not merge them in the seller space.

Is restocking already active?

June and October place it in expansion or coming soon. The directory's restocking badge is not a rate. It is not an automatic purchasing guide.

Should Sparky be whitelisted in the Web Application Firewall (WAF)?

No for the app: the chat is internal to Walmart. The firewall is for another agent on your theme. Not a directory button.

What should be done this week?

If you are on Walmart: listing, reviews. Separate Instant Checkout and Ask Sparky. Do not budget for Gemini. Postpone the exclusive connector.
